How to Design Your Monogram

Monograms have been around for centuries as a form of identification. Originally used by royalty and artisans, they came into more common usage in the Victorian era.

In the 19th century, the rules for creating a monogram were simple and stringent. But in the 21st century, there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to identifying yourself or loved ones through a monogram. Your monogram can be traditional, modern, elegant, trendy, sophisticated, fun - anything you want! Just as a business creates its own logo to identify itself in the marketplace, you should feel free to design your monogram so it reflects you and your world. Below are some examples of traditional monograms and some more contemporary ones that reflect our modern way of life.

The most traditional monogram for a woman (and the one most commonly used today) has the first name initial on the left, the last name initial in the middle and larger, and the middle name initial on the right.  For instance, a monogram for Alice Carol Baker would be:

Then came the traditional male monogram where all the initials are the same size and are ordered by first name, middle name, last name.  Robert Bruce McKenzie's monogram would look like this:
RBM

Married people sharing the same last name typically place the bride's first name initial on the left, the groom's initial on the right and their last name initial in the center (larger).  So Ella and Tom Levin would be:
Our lives and families are more complicated today and below we're going to show you some suggestions for creating monograms for different situations.  Eric Sanders and John Williams are life partners.  Their monogram could look like this:

ESWJ

Ann Baker and Tom Connelly will combine their names after marriage into the hyphenated name, Baker-Connelly.  Their monogram can be designed as this:

BC or ABCT or even AB-CT

Today the term "monogram" has also come to include embroidering or printing a single initial, a full first name or a full last name using any font or style on almost any surface.  So when you create your own special "logo," design what has the most meaning to your life!

Here at www.mrsmckenziesmonograms.com we have 1000s of designs and fonts, so if you have something special in mind that you don't see on our website, just contact us and we can try to help you create your very own monogram.
